You may be familiar with many Learning Tools Interoperability (LTIs) or third party apps from previous work, but since adopting Canvas full-time, a number of new LTIs have been acquired to further your experience in Canvas.

Let’s take a look at what apps and tools you can use to support your teaching and learning.

Ally Accessibility Report

Ally is fully integrated and tested in Canvas, supplementing the VLE’s existing in-built accessibility checker. The app produces scores on how accessible your content is - from PDFs to videos and images - and offers guidance on to make this content more accessibility.

Atomic Search

Atomic Search provides search functionality within Canvas courses for both staff and students. This makes searching for content in large courses much quicker, but also assists colleagues in indexing their content. You can find the search box at the top of your Canvas homepage and courses.

Badgr Europe

Badgr allows colleagues to award e-badges/rewards to students for different tasks completed in their Canvas course - for example, finishing the module reading. This allows colleagues to recognise student achievement.

Bibliu

Bibliu provides e-textbooks and digital content to students, schools and departments at reduced prices. Schools can create e-reading lists and content repositories for their students to access directly from Canvas.

BuddyCheck

Colleagues may decide to use BuddyCheck when assessing students via group assignments. BuddyCheck helps to make this process as fair as possible by providing comprehensive peer evaluations – private assessments students complete of the contribution of other members of their team – that you can use in your grading.

You can use this information to update student’s grades based on their group contribution, as well as export them to CSV file for local storage.

BuddyCheck is fully integrated into Canvas and allows students to evaluate each other’s group contributions securely. BuddyCheck can also update students’ grades within Canvas based on their peer assessment results or export them to CSV format for the instructor.

Canvas Commons

Commons is a learning object repository that enables educators to find, import, and share resources. A digital library full of educational content, Commons allows Canvas users to share learning resources with other users as well as import learning resources into a Canvas course.

Canvas Studio

Canvas Studio is a communication tool that allows instructors and students to actively collaborate through video and audio media. Studio's interface lets students and instructors engage with media content by commenting directly on the media timeline. Students can learn from each other's insights as well as from the instructor's direction and feedback.

Cengage Learning

Cengage is a global education and technology company built for learners. It provides curated content in new delivery models to empower libraries as they transform into centres of learning.

Code Lab

Provides code-based functionality for specialist Canvas courses and modules.

CodeGrade

CodeGrade allows colleagues to engage students with immediate and continuous automatic feedback on their coding, as well as set tests directly in the CodeGrade UI or seamlessly integrate their own testing scripts. The easy-to-use editor gives students a user-friendly environment so they can focus on the assignment at hand while getting instant and continuous feedback from the autograder. If you are teaching Introduction to Python or Java, CodeGrade comes with 40+ pre-configured fully automatically graded assignments. Built-in plagiarism detection that is especially designed for code, with an insightful online interface and export functionality.

Dropbox

Dropbox provides a centralised place to securely store documents, manage data access and work together on projects.

Edpuzzle

Edpuzzle allows colleagues to find a video, add questions and assign it to your class. Watch as they progress and view their level of engagement, who has watched for how long and more. An extension for YouTube videos is also available.

ePortfolio

The ePortfolio is a web-based tool that enables trainees to log all evidence of their experience, competencies and courses for their entire medical training period.

EquatIO

EquatIO is an equation-writing integration that allows you or your students to speak, draw or type problems and equations directly onto your device. Powered by Desmos graphing calculator, Equatio helps students to visualise and explore a written equation. Also, students with differing needs or visual impairments can hear their maths read aloud to them.

Flip (formerly Flipgrid)

FlipGrid, the video-sharing tool has been growing in popularity in recent years – so popular in fact that its rise has been called “FlipGrid Fever.” The web app has been free since its acquisition by Microsoft. FlipGrid allows us teachers to easily create 'grids' of videos that encourage discussion. Every grid behaves as a message board that teachers can post questions to and students reply with a video answer. You can share these grids with your class or student groups interested in a common topic. There is no limit to the questions you can put up on each grid and students don’t have a limit in terms of responses either. You have the flexibility of including a text-based question or videos, images, gifs or attachments while the customizable security settings let you better protect your students’ privacy.

FlipGrid has a wide range of moderation features, so you can understand how the app works and figure out the right settings for your class. One feature is the CoPilot where you can appoint other teachers as moderators of grids.

GeoGebra

GeoGebra is dynamic mathematics software for all levels of education that brings together geometry, algebra, spreadsheets, graphing, statistics and calculus in one easy-to-use package.

GitHub

GitHub is a code hosting platform for collaboration and version control. GitHub lets you (and others) work together on projects.

Graide

Graide uses AI to analyse your student feedback responses, learn common comments and notes, and then allow you to provide multiple pieces of work the same comment if this is appropriate.

Hypothes.is

Hypothes.is uses open source software to allow you and your students to annotate web content, have discussions and share notes.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is a nonprofit with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. Learn for free about math, art, computer programming, economics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, finance, history, and more.

Kortext

Kortext is the UK’s leading personal learning platform and supplier of digital textbooks. They provide instructors with digital content for their courses.

The Library has a pre-exisiting relationship with Kortext, giving students from selected modules access to digital copies of key titles. Students can access eBooks via the Kortext reader, store this content offline, bookmark passages of interest and view any annotations that you have added to the passages.

LearnMax

LearnMax is a provider of cloud-based e-learning software for conducting live online classes. LearnMax software allows teachers to communicate with students using audio, video, and screen sharing. It also allows teachers to create and record lessons that students can access on demand.

LibGuides

The University of Liverpool online library service, containing the full digitised catalogue. This is often the default point of access for students accessing reading list content.

LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser is a proprietary web browser and software suite designed to ensure that online or remote exams are free from cheating. When LockDown Browser is used during an online exam, students are unable to go to other URLs, switch applications, take screenshots, copy questions or print. It essentially locks students into the exam until it’s submitted for grading.

MATLAB Grader

MATLAB Grader lets you scale assessments and automatically grade MATLAB coding assignments in any learning environment. You can use MATLAB Grader for formative assessments with automated feedback and summative assessments such as quizzes.

McGraw-Hill Connect

McGraw-Hill Connect is a digital learning and teaching system that is developed for both students and educators in higher education institutions. Described as a flexible and robust toolkit, it saves students and teachers time and aids them in enhancing learning results. It uses an adaptive technology that empowers students to retain the concepts they learned and identify the ones they aren’t familiar with.

Microsoft Office365

Work with your students to create, share and collaborate on Office365 files and apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Exchange, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher) in real time. Users will have access to their OneDrive files.

Microsoft Teams

MS Teams is available in Canvas as an app to embed within the rich content editor of a text area, probably more in Pages. Remember to look for the Plug icon in the toolbar of the text editor rather than a Teams logo.

Mobius Assessment

Mobius Assessment is provided for STEM subjects, particularly courses involving mathematics, that require distinct assessment materials and question types. These include:

A consolidated gradebook so all assignment results are kept in one place
Student access to all assignments from one location
Question types such as graph sketching, mathematical free response, numerical responses with margin-of-error

New Analytics

New Analytics is an LTI tool installed at the account level and can be made visible in all courses. Data is refreshed for published courses in the New Analytics dashboard every 24 hours. New Analytics allows instructors to track average course grades for student submissions using an interactive chart graph or table. Data is for viewing only and cannot directly be changed.Page views and participation metrics include an aggregate across all devices, including Canvas mobile apps.

OneNote Class Notebook

Microsoft OneNote is a note-taking program for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration. It gathers users' notes, drawings, screen clippings, and audio commentaries. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network.

Padlet

Padlet provides a cloud-based software-as-a-service, hosting a real-time collaborative web platform in which users can upload, organize, and share content to virtual bulletin boards called "padlets".

Panopto Recordings

Panopto is a multi-functional video content management tool. The three main uses are the Media Library, which allows instructors and students to store and stream video files similar to Canvas, as well as create a personal library of media. Video content can also be recorded directly in Panopto in an easy and efficient way and integrated into your Canvas course. Finally, it also allows in-video quizzes, with grades recorded directly into the Canvas gradebook.

PebblePad

PebblePad is designed for logging and evidencing achievements, experiences and skills of learners. The app is integrated into Canvas where students can create:

Workbooks – A structured series of forms filled in by the user, for example a field of reflection or attached files for evidence. Workbooks can be set up to span entire courses, modules or even sit entirely outside of academic assessment.
Portfolios – Free-form, multi-page online documents that can be used as CVs, websites or assessments.
Logs – Record experiences and completed work.

Piazza

Piazza is a Q&A integration that allows both colleagues and students to question, answer and learn from one another.

Quizlet

Quizlet is an online study application that allows students to study information via learning tools and games.

Canvas Quizzes

An in-built Canvas feature offering multiple different ways of quizzing, testing and submitting feedback to students.

Reading Lists @ Liverpool

Compile your course reading lists, as well as relevant library access links or other URLs, in one easy place for students to access.

Screencast-O-Matic

Allows the user to record and securely share screen-recordings, both live and edited.

Slideshare

SlideShare is a popular presentation and document sharing platform owned by LinkedIn.

Turnitin

Assessment submission and plagiarism-detector for academic and student submissions.
