Where quizzes are used, particularly for running online exams, it is useful to be able to provide rule exceptions to specific students, for example additional time for those students with a support plan in place. Depending on the quiz engine used 'Classic' or 'New Quizzes' the approach is different but similar.

Note. The Classic quiz feature is being depracated in favour of New Quizzes starting Summer 2022, with mechanisms to transfer quizzes in place. There are many lecturers who value unique features of Classic quizzes however, so we are monitoring this situation. Classic quizzes

How to setup: Once I publish a timed quiz, how can I give my students extra time?

It is possible to give students additional time prior to exam starting, but the quiz needs to be Published (Availability dates can control access), and there also needs to be a timer in place. It appears that the overall quiz 'Until' availability will override any additional time settings, so our advice is to make sure that the Until date has enough 'headroom' so that all students can benefit from their additional time allotment.

How does it look for students?

On the overview page that students see when they enter a quiz (but before they begin) Canvas clearly reports the time limit and this reflects any additional accommodations given. There is space here to provide some tutor narrative so you could include some text within the quiz brief (within the Quiz Edit screen) to help boost student confidence, for example: "Students - you will all undertake the same quiz, but you will see here that your individual alloted time is reflected in the quiz overview screen, and the timer that appears during the quiz will also reflect any indivisual support plans you have in place".

Use of the New Quiz Moderate tool appears straight forward. Only additional things to note is that on the Moderate screen you should use the Moderate button to give additional time, as if you edit the Accomodations column directly then this time allowance will apply to all other quizzes for that student in the course.
