Why it's easy to stay on the right side of copyright

In a Canvas and Coffee session, Gordon Sandison, Licenses Manager at the Library, explained why it's important to remain copyright compliant and, crucially, how to do this. Spoiler: it’s really easy, and the Library will support you the whole way.

During his talk, which you can watch below, Gordon gives a straightforward explanation of the different types of copyright permissions, laws and licenses that you need to be aware of, including the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) license, Educational Recording Agency (ERA) license, Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) and more.

The Library Digitisation Service

When requested, the Library can scan content for your course, such as books and articles, and check that it is either held by the Library, licensed to the Library or falls within ‘fair use’ allowance. If this is the case, the team will produce a high quality, digital copy of the materials for you to use and embed into your Canvas course. Where necessary, such as when permissions are not held, the Library will order the materials for you.

Canvas ‘MOT’ service

The Library will work with you to go through content in your course and provide support, guidance and feedback around copyright compliance and accessibility requirements. Again where applicable, the Library will work with you to find alternatives or fix any issues.
