Just like other social media channels, you can personalise your Canvas profile and amend your notification settings.

Your profile

Every student has their own profile area, which you can personalise to make it easier for other students and staff to recognise you, which is particularly handy as much of this year’s teaching is likely to be online.

Notifications

We recommend you set this to ‘Notify me right away’ so you don’t miss any important announcements, conversations or updates.

You will find Notifications under your Account menu. Notifications allow you to select how and when you want to be notified when various events occur within a course. Note that your settings will apply across all your Canvas courses.

You can edit notification preferences for many areas, including Course Activities and Discussions, and can choose to receive them via email or mobile.

There are four notification preferences to choose from:

The tick symbol represents the notification preference Notify me right away and, when chosen, ensures that you are immediately notified of changes in the corresponding area.
The clock symbol represents the preference for Canvas to Send daily summary. When this is chosen, you will receive a daily update for notifications.
A calendar icon is used to represent Send weekly summary, and when chosen will give you notifications in the corresponding area once weekly.
If you do not want to receive a notification, click the Remove icon [4]. When this option is chosen, you are deactivating notifications for the corresponding item/area in Canvas. Choosing this means you will not receive notifications. We strongly advise that you do not use this setting as you may miss important updates on your course.

To change your preferences, simply click the icon representing the notification alert you require, and you should see it appear as a green button, showing that the preference has been set and is now active.
