Research Beyond the Dissertation: Preparing Your PhD Students for an Academic Future

Postgraduate programmes in the UK are comparatively short, and PhD students in the humanities and social sciences typically devote most of their time to the writing and completion of their dissertations. There is little time available for any further academic development. Meanwhile, the world of academia is both global and competitive, and UK graduates applying for university jobs often find themselves competing against older and more experienced international candidates. In this presentation, I will offer concrete advice on how PhD supervisors in smaller fields can help their students acquire some of the skills and experiences necessary for a successful start to their academic careers.
